Schedule of Events – 2008
February 1 – 29 In honor of Black History Month, the Historical Association of South Haven will sponsor a display of photographs of prominent members of the Black community at the South Haven Memorial Library. These citizen’s have been chosen each year for the past thirty years as exemplary members of the community by the Black History Leadership Society.
Saturday, February 2 10:00-3:00 The Historical Association will be present at the annual South Haven Icebreaker celebration in front of the Hidden Room Bookstore at 518 Phoenix St., where they will take part in the ice carving competition as well as man their tables of merchandise. Free hot cider and donut holes will be available.
Saturday, February 9 1:00 p.m. As part of the month-long Black History Celebration, the Historical Association of South Haven will sponsor an illustrated storytelling program at the South Haven Memorial Library. Well-known artist Wendy Halperin and storyteller John Mooy will present “A TRIBUTE: Stories of Black History in South Haven.” The illustrated storytelling event will focus on important local Black history and explore the spectrum of human qualities from cruelty to perseverance and triumph. Refreshments will be served.
Thursday, April 24 10:00-3:00 The Historical Association of South Haven will sponsor “Celebrating Michigan History – A Glimpse into the Past” at North Shore Elementary School. The multi-faceted day will include a lecture in the morning by local historian Robert Myers, a visit from Tiller’s International and their oxen, and hands-on activities with traditional artisans and craftspeople.
Saturday, May 24 7:00-10:00 p.m. The Historical Association of South Haven kicks off its yearly Membership Drive with a celebration at Hartman School, where this year the Jeanette Stieve Memorial Library will be showcased.
Tuesday, June 3 7:00 p.m. As part of its month-long Membership Drive, the Historical Association of South Haven will present one of its popular Appleyard slide programs at the Hartman School building narrated by Lee Niffenegger.
Tuesday, June 10 7:00 p.m. As part of its month-long Membership Drive, the Historical Association of South Haven is pleased to host a lecture by Toni Benson entitled “Everyone’s a Genealogist.” Toni is the Local History librarian for the Van Buren District Library as well as the Vice-President and Librarian for the Van Buren Regional Genealogical Society.
Saturday & Sunday, June 14 & 15 10:00-4:00 The Historical Association of South Haven will have their booth at Harborfest located along Black River.
Tuesday, June 17 7:00 p.m. The Historical Association of South Haven presents a program featuring local musicians Pam Chappell, Andru Bemis and Jim Hughey celebrating our town’s history in song.
Tuesday, June 24 7:00 p.m. The Historical Association of South Haven will present a lecture entitled "Adventures in Michigan's Past" by well-known historian Larry Massie.
Wednesday, June 25 Self-guided Driving Tour begins
Sunday, June 29 2:00-4:00 p.m. The Historical Association of South Haven presents the Second Annual Sherman’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social. With a record number of people attending last year, the Ice Cream Social is back this year by popular demand! The Sherman family will again be on hand to scoop ice cream and talk about old times on the farm and at the dairy. The Casco Band will provide entertainment.
Friday, July 4 11:00 a.m. The Historical Association of South Haven will once again be driving their 1939 Chevrolet delivery truck in the annual 4th of July Parade.
Sunday, July 6 10:00-4:00 The Historical Association of South Haven will have their booth across from the Maritime Museum as part of the Art in the Park celebration.
Wednesday, July 16 7:00 p.m The Historical Association of South Haven will present another of the popular Appleyard slide shows narrated by Lee Niffenegger. The program will take place at the Hartman School building.
Sunday, August 3 2:00 p.m. The Historical Association of South Haven will host the Douglas Dutchers and the Door Village Prairie Dogs from Indiana for a Vintage Base Ball game at Ratcliffe Field, located directly behind Hartman School.
Saturday, August 9 1:00 p.m. The Historical Association of South Haven will drive their 1939 Chevrolet delivery truck in the Annual Blueberry Festival Parade.
Wednesday, August 13 Self-guided driving tour ends.
August 19 7:00 p.m. The Historical Association of South Haven will present “The Last Picture Show (of the summer).” The program will take place at the Hartman School building and will be narrated by Lee Niffenegger.
Saturday & Sunday, August 30 & 31 10:00-4:00 The Historical Association will have their booth across from the Maritime Museum as they take part in the All Crafts Fair.

The Historical Association of South Haven is located at 355 Hubbard St. in South Haven and is open from May thru October on Sundays from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
